Rapid Rust Test AvailableA simple, quick, in-field soybean rust test is expected to be ready in time to use this season. EnviroLogix Inc. of Portland, ME, is preparing to offer the QuickStix five-minute test strip by planting time.
"Anybody out there can use it for testing right in the field, from the crop consultant and retailer right down to the grower," says Dean Layton, EnviroLogix vice president, marketing and sales. The test will be distributed by various ag chemical suppliers, including GROWMARK, Helena Chemical, Agriliance, and United Suppliers.
In the meantime, the company has just introduced the first rapid test to detect soybean infections in plant tissue. The QualiPlate Kit for Soybean Rust is expected to be used by state, Extension, and university laboratories. "It requires a basic lab set-up, but some more aggressive crop consultants could use it," Layton says.
The laboratory assay utilizes an ELISA plate format, takes about two hours to complete, and provides a presence/absence answer that is visible without requiring a spectrophotmetric reader. It can detect a single symptomatic leaf spot caused by Phakopsora species at a very early stage, before the formation of a pustule and sporulation, when it is difficult to differentiate the symptom from other diseases or insect damage.
The QualiPlate Kit for Soybean Rust costs $295. For more information on either test, click here to visit the EnviroLogix Web site at

Amy Fahnestock, Apr 05 2005, 11:49Quilt Fungicide Receives Section 18Minnesota has issued a Section 18 emergency exemption for Quilt fungicide, manufactured by Syngenta Crop Protection, to be used in soybeans to control soybean rust. Other states also are expected to approve Quilt, which offers both preventive and curative activity.
Quilt is a combination of Quadris (azoxystrobin) and Tilt (propiconazole) fungicides, and offers 14 to 21 days of residual activity. Similar combinations have become very popular in Brazil as a soybean rust management tool, according to Marty Wiglesworth, soybean rust technical manager.
"Propiconazole moves rapidly into the leaf while azoxystrobin is absorbed over time," Wiglesworth says. "That gives us a continuous supply of fungicide protection. With soybean rust, which can defoliate a field in as little as a week after the outbreak starts, we want to go after the pathogen with both barrels."
In those areas where Quilt is not yet approved, a tank mix of equal amounts of Quadris and Tilt will achieve the same curative/preventive effect. Amy Fahnestock, Mar 30 2005, 20:54Domark Fungicide Granted Section 18 In MinnesotaMost of the soybean-growing states have granted a Section 18 exemption for Domark fungicide from Valent U.S.A. Corp. Domark, part of the triazole class, provides both preventive and curative protection against Asian soybean rust damage.
The Section 18 exemption has been approved in Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Domark has shown superior activity in USDA trials in both South America and South Africa. It is currently used on 75% of all soybean bean acres treated in Brazil.
"Domark is recognized as the premier fungicide and has a proven track record for superior control of Asian soybean rust, " says Jamie Nielson, Domark product manager. "Its unmatched control serves as a first line of defense to protect soybean investments and minimize yield losses from Asian soybean rust. "
The 230 ME (micro-emulsion) formulation is designed specifically to treat Asian soybean rust in the U.S. soybean crop. The leaf quickly absorbs Domark, which is then evenly distributed throughout the soybean plant. According to Valent, Domark can provide more than three weeks of protection against Asian soybean rust, and protects newly emerging plants for 21 days or longer after treatment.
Valent plans to submit the product for a full EPA Section 3 registration on soybeans in 2005. Valent entered into an agreement with Isagro USA to market Domark for soybean rust control in the U.S. earlier this year.
Amy Fahnestock, Mar 30 2005, 20:25Bumper Fungicide Receives Section 18Bumper 41.8EC fungicide (containing the active ingredient propiconazole) from Makhteshim Agan of North America, Inc. (MANA) is the latest product to receive a Section 18 emergency exemption to control Asian soybean rust in soybeans.
The label change had been approved by 25 states at the time of the early February announcement: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennesee, Texas, and Virginia.
The label expansion is pending in Colorado, Georgia, Louisiana, New Jersey, South Carolina, Wisconsin, and West Virginia.
Bumper, a triazole fungicide, also provides preventive action. "Bumper is a systemic fungicide that can be used preventively, prior to disease infection, and curatively if applied shortly after infection occurs," says Dr. James Whitehead, MANA development manager.
Production of Bumper has been increased for the 2005 growing season and will be reviewed on a regular basis in an effort to meet market demand. Complete recommendations with actives, rates, and timings should be available later this year. Amy Fahnestock, Feb 16 2005, 15:58ProductsClick Here
